US steel scrap exports drop by 10.85 percent in January-May

According to the statistics released by the US International Trade Commission (US ITC), in the January-May period of this year US steel scrap exports amounted to 7.95 million metric tons, declining by 10.85 percent as compared to the corresponding period of 2009.
 
In the first five months of 2010, US steel scrap exports to Turkey amounted to 1.53 million metric tons, increasing by 3.21 percent, while US steel scrap exports to South Korea totaled 1.41 million metric tons, up 22.45 percent, and its steel scrap exports to China came to 1.21 million metric tons, down 59.01 percent, all compared to the January-May period of 2009.
 
In the given period, among the top ten US steel scrap export destinations, the most striking year-on-year growth rate is registered in steel scrap exports to Malaysia. In the January-May period, Malaysia imported 405,354 metric tons of steel scrap from the US, compared to 5,042 metric tons imported in the first five months of 2009.
