Local news agencies reported Thursday that Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania-based US Steel's Edgar Thomson Works slab mill and Clairton Coke Works, both a part of its Mon Valley Works integrated facility, will receive their long-awaited federal air quality permits from Allegheny County, Pennsylvania's health department.

In order to receive the permits, which are mandatory under the US' Clean Air Act, US Steel spent over $1 billion on improvements at the Clairton coke facility. US Steel also had to invest in improving emissions from its basic oxygen furnace and ladle metallurgical facility.
