Local news in Keewatin, Minnesota reported Wednesday that the City Council withheld approval for a request from US Steel, which seeks to terminate an agreement for the company to monitor the city’s water supply.
The Water Supply Contingency Plan (WSCP) was signed in 2009 to ensure US Steel’s Keetac Expansion Project would have no impact on the city’s water. However, the company later decided to not pursue the expansion and is now proposing to terminate the agreement.
In addition to monitoring the Carlz Pit in relation to the expansion, the current deal also monitors the water levels in the Mesabi Chief Pit, St. Paul Pit and at Keewatin’s Well 2, which isn’t in service.
A decision on the agreement was tabled by the City Council after discussion.
