According to a letter received by United Steelworkers this week, a portion of US Steel’s Lorain plant could close permanently by March.

The portion of the mill known as “four seamless” produced small-diameter pipe until it was idled in 2015. About 200 employees were affected, USW Local 1104 President Dennis Hamilton told local media, adding that 33 layoffs at the “three seamless” portion of the mill took effect earlier this week.

Hamilton said while some of the laid off employees from four seamless might be able to return to the three seamless portion of the mill, it will be determined on a case-by-case basis when the closure is official.
