During a visit to Klein Steel in Rochester, New York on Wednesday, US Senator Charles Schumer called on the US Department of Defense to restore the requirement that all steel used in military contracts be made in the US.
Schumer stated that US military contractors sourced their steel solely from US producers for 35 years until 2009, when the Defense Department dropped the requirement as demand increased for the Iraq and Afghanistan wars.
Now that US troops have pulled out of Iraq, Schumer said that US-made steel supply should be enough to meet the military's demand.
