US raw steel production slips 0.3 percent

As reported this week by the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI), during the week ended December 15, 2007, raw steel production in the US decreased by 0.3 percent from the previous week, dropping to 2.057 million net tons (nt).

The previous week's numbers showed 2.064 million nt of raw steel produced by the US. Steel production for the week ended December 15, 2007 was up 18.6 percent from the 1.733 million net tons produced the same week of last year.

The Southern district produced the most raw steel for the week ended December 15, 2007, with a total of 625,000 nt, followed by the Indiana/Chicago district with 533,000 nt. 

Year-to-date net tonnage as of December 15, 2007 registered at 102.4 million nt with mills working at an average capability utilization rate of 86.0 percent.  When comparing with last year's figures, YTD net tonnage as of December 15, 2006 totaled 104.8 million nt with mills working at an average capability utilization rate of 87.5 percent.
