According to the American Iron and Steel Institute, in the week ending April 12, 2014, US domestic raw steel production was 1,785,000 net tons while the capability utilization rate was 74.2 percent. Production was 1,837,000 net tons in the week ending April 12, 2013, while the capability utilization then was 76.7 percent. The current week production represents a 2.8 percent decrease from the same period in the previous year. Production for the week ending April 12, 2014 is up 1.3 percent from the previous week ending April 5, 2014 when production was 1,762,000 net tons and the rate of capability utilization was 73.3 percent.
Adjusted year-to-date production through April 12, 2014 was 26,631,000 net tons, at a capability utilization rate of 76.1 percent. That is a 0.8 percent decrease from the 26,850,000 net tons during the same period last year, when the capability utilization rate was 76.9 percent.
