US raw steel production falls for third consecutive week

The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) reported Monday that US raw steel production fell 2.1 percent last week (ended June 2), following a 0.8 percent drop the previous week, and a 1.4 percent decline the week prior. Most notably, raw steel production fell from 262,000 nt last week to 223,000 nt in the Northeastern region last week.

Total raw steel production in the United States amounted to 1,920,000 net tons (nt) last week, representing a 2.1 percent reduction from the 1,961,000 nt produced in the previous week, and a 6.5 percent increase from the 1,802,000 nt produced in the same week of last year.

The capacity utilization rate of US raw steelmaking facilities was 77.7 percent in the week ending June 2, compared to 79.4 percent in the previous week and 73.7 percent in the same week a year ago.
