US raw steel production edges up year-on year, edges down week-on-week

According to the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI), in the week ending June 4, 2016, US domestic raw steel production was 1,760,000 net tons while the capability utilization rate was 75.3 percent. Production was 1,744,000 net tons in the week ending June 4, 2015 while the capability utilization then was 73.7 percent. The current week production represents a 0.9 percent increase from the same period in the previous year. Production for the week ending June 4, 2016 is down 0.8 percent from the previous week ending May 28, 2016 when production was 1,775,000 net tons and the rate of capability utilization was 75.9 percent.

Adjusted year-to-date production through June 4, 2016 was 38,776,000 net tons, at a capability utilization rate of 72.1 percent. That is down 0.7 percent from the 39,051,000 net tons during the same period last year, when the capability utilization rate was 71.8 percent.
