US raw steel production drops 12.3 percent year-on-year

According to the American Iron and Steel Institute, in the week ending March 21, 2015, US domestic raw steel production was 1,639,000 net tons while the capability utilization rate was 69.3 percent. Production was 1,868,000 net tons in the week ending March 21, 2014 while the capability utilization then was 77.7 percent. The current week production represents a 12.3 percent decrease from the same period in the previous year. Production for the week ending March 21, 2015 is up 1.0 percent from the previous week ending March 14, 2015 when production was 1,623,000 net tons and the rate of capability utilization was 68.7 percent.

Adjusted year-to-date production through March 21, 2015 was 19,917,000 net tons, at a capability utilization rate of 73.7 percent. That is down 5.1 percent from the 20,980,000 net tons during the same period last year, when the capability utilization rate was 77.1 percent.
