US preliminary imports fall again in September

The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) reported Tuesday that preliminary data from the US Census Bureau indicated that steel imports totaled about 2.24 million net tons (nt) in September, down 9 percent from August. Finished steel imports also fell 9 percent from August, amounting to 1.66 million nt in September, bringing finished steel import market share to 20 percent in September.
Nevertheless, imports for a number of products were still up in September. Standard rail imports were up 100 percent in September from August and tin plate imports rose 50 percent. Year-to-date, cut-to-length plate imports are up 52 percent over last year, plates in coils imports rose 34 percent, oil country goods jumped 25 percent and rebar imports increased 24 percent.
