US mill shipments in June up 2.4 percent from last year

The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) reported Tuesday that in June 2008, US steel mills shipped 9,136,000 net tons (nt), up 2.4 percent from the amount shipped in June 2007, and up 1.4 percent from the amount shipped in the previous month, May 2008.

Year-to-date shipment data show the following changes within major market classifications in 2008 compared to the same period of 2007: service centers and distributors, up 5.1 percent; automotive, down 3.7 percent; construction and contractors' products, down 2.6 percent; and oil and gas, up 4.7 percent.

AISI is comprised of 28 member companies and 138 associate and affiliate members, representing approximately 75 percent of both North American and US steel capacity.
