US iron and steel scrap exports down 36.3% in Q1

According to the statistics released by the US International Trade Commission (US ITC), in March this year exports of iron and steel scrap from the US amounted to 1.33 million mt, increasing by 11.12 percent from February and down 32.19 percent compared to March 2013. The value of these exports increased by 8.83 percent compared to February and decreased by 36.53 percent year on year, amounting to $521.89 million.

Meanwhile, in the first quarter this year, exports of iron and steel scrap from the US totaled 3.43 million mt, decreasing by 36.33 percent year on year.

In March, Turkey was the leading scrap export destination of the US, importing 359,671 mt, recording a 78.46 percent rise month on month and a 36.24 decrease year on year. Turkey was followed by Taiwan and South Korea, which received 220,018 mt and 167,640 mt of scrap from the US, respectively. Meanwhile, Turkey was also the leading scrap export destination of the US in the first quarter, receiving 712,376 mt, down 56.61 percent year on year.
