US Freight TSI edges up 0.9 percent in January

The US Department of Transportation's Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) reported Wednesday that the Freight Transportation Services Index (TSI) rose 0.9 percent from December to January.

Compared to January 2010, the Freight TSI was up 6.9 percent in January 2011 to 108.1 percent. January 2011's index is up 14.6 percent from the most recent low of 94.3 in April 2009 when the index reached 94.3. January's TSI is also only 4.6 percent below its historic peak of 113.3 reached in January 2005.

The Freight TSI rose 14.6 percent over the last 21 months, starting in May 2009, after declining 16.8 percent in the previous 16 months beginning in January 2008. The index has increased in 16 of the last 21 months.
