US freight shipments fall 1 percent in April

The US Department of Transportation's Bureau of Transportation Statistics' (BTS) Freight Transportation Services Index (TSI) reported Wednesday that the amount of freight carried by the for-hire transportation industry declined 1 percent in April from March.

Freight shipments rose 3.7 percent from April 2010 to April 2011, and were up a more modest 0.6 percent for the first four months of 2011.
