US export value of scrap increased 31 percent in H1 2017

According to trade data published by WorldCity from US Census analysis, US exports of scrap iron and steel increased 31 percent from $1.65 billion in H1 2016 to $2.16 billion in H1 2017.

The full year 2016 value was $3.6 billion, which was $416.1 million or approximately a 10 percent decline over 2015.

Through June of 2017, the top US scrap export destinations were China ($429 million), Turkey ($333 million), Taiwan ($254 million), Mexico ($228 million) and India ($126 million). Of the total, 65 percent of the total value was shipped to the top five destinations. The top ports were Port of Los Angeles, Port of Newark, Port of Long Beach, Port of Oakland, and Port of New York. Approximately $901 million was exported via the 4 West coast districts (Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seatle, and Portland) included in the top 10 US districts.
