US construction activity improves in June

The US Census Bureau and the US Department of Housing and Urban Development jointly released Tuesday that both building permits and housing starts increased in June.

Privately-owned housing units authorized by building permits in June were approximately 624,000, 2.5 percent above the May rate and is 6.7 percent above the June 2010 estimate of 585,000.

Housing starts had a more dramatic change in June, jumping 14.6 percent compared to May to 629,000 and swelling 16.7 percent compared to June 2010.

Housing completions, on the other hand, fell 1.7 percent in June to 535,000 and slumped 39.3 percent compared to June of last year.
