US and Canadian steel service center shipments surge in September

According to a report from the Metals Service Center Institute, US service center steel shipments in September 2014 increased by 8.3 percent from September 2013. Steel product inventories increased 16.4 percent from September a year ago. At the current shipping rate, this represents 2.6 months of supply in inventory.

Meanwhile, Canadian service center shipments of steel products in September 2014 increased by 4.1 percent from September 2013. For 2014 year-to-date, steel shipments were essentially unchanged from the same period in 2013. Steel product inventories increased 16.5 percent from September a year ago. At the current shipping rate, this represents 3.1 months of supply in inventory.
