US and Canadian rig count improves

Baker Hughes reported Friday that for the week through July 3, the US rig count increased by nine from the previous week to 1,757, following double-digit decreases in the two prior weeks. The rig count was still down 208 from the same week a year ago when active drilling rigs totaled 1,965. The oil rig count increased by five to 1,395, and the gas rig count was up by two to 355.

Meanwhile, the rig count in Canada continued its weeks-long positive streak, rising by eight to 214 for the week through July 3. Canada's rig count was still down 50 from 264 a year ago.
