Baker Hughes reported Friday that for the week ending January 25, the US rig count increased by four to 1,753, the first increase in the past nine weeks. On a year-on-year basis, the US rig count was still down 255 rigs. Rigs drilling for oil fell by one to 1,315 while gas-directed rigs increased by five to 434.

Canada's rig count increased by 20 to 621, continuing the trend of double and even triple-digit gains over the last few weeks. Even so, Canada's rig count was down 61 rigs from the same week a year ago.
