Ukrainian steelmakers issue January 2009 output data

The major Ukrainian steelmakers have released their preliminary production results for the first month of 2009.

Accordingly, during the given period Ilyich Iron and Steel Works of Mariupol (Ilyich) reduced its finished steel products output by 57.3 percent and its pipe production by 57.45 percent year on year, to 194,000 mt and 2,000 mt respectively. Ilyich's crude steel production decreased by 55.42 percent, its pig iron output by 51 percent and its agglomerate production by 52.4 percent, year on year. The respective figures in metric tons were 259,000, 224,000 and 545,000.

During the first month of 2009, Azovstal decreased its crude steel output by 56.8 percent to 240,000 metric tons, pig iron production by 54.3 percent to 208,000 mt and its finished steel production by 53.5 percent to 222,000 mt, all compared to corresponding period of 2008. Meanwhile, Azovstal's agglomerate production stands at the level of last year, i.e., at 169,000 metric tons.

In January 2009, ArcelorMittal Kriviy Rih produced 337,000 mt of finished steel - down 42.9 percent, 297,000 mt of crude steel - down 53.67 percent, 282,000 mt of pig iron - down 50.5 percent and 553,000 mt of agglomerate - down 39.16 percent, all compared to the first month of 2008.

During the first month of 2009, Zaporizhstal decreased its finished steel production by 25 percent and its crude steel production by 27.3 percent year on year, to 222,000 mt and 266,000 mt respectively. Zaporizhstal's agglomerate production went down by 8.3 percent and its pig iron production declined by 21.5 percent year on year. The respective figures in metric tons were 397,000 and 226,000.

During the period in question, Alchevsk Iron and Steel Works (Alchevsk) reduced its pig iron production by 27 percent, its crude steel production by 19.06 percent, its finished steel production by 10.8 percent, and its agglomerate production by 10.1 percent year on year. The respective figures in metric tons were 263,000, 293,000, 273,000 and 365,000.

During the first month of 2009, Yenakievo Iron and Steel Works (EMZ) decreased its pig iron production by 27.8 percent to 177,000 mt, its crude steel production by 22 percent to 206,000 mt, its finished steel output by 20.6 percent to 200,000 mt, and its agglomerate production by 16.75 percent to 169,000 mt, all compared with the same period last year.
