In 2009, the Ukrainian flat steel producer
Ilyich Iron and Steel Works of Mariupol (
Ilyich) saw its steel product exports fall by 14.72 percent year on year to 3.123 million mt, being affected by the global decline in steel demand.
Accordingly, in 2009, of
Ilyich's overall sales, 74.16 percent of steel products were delivered to non-
CIS countries, 6.28 percent of products were shipped to
CIS countries, while 19.56 percent of steel products were sold in the Ukrainian domestic market, the Interfax-
Ukraine news agency has reported.
The company's exports in 2009 were delivered to 69 countries, with the largest importers of
Ilyich's steel products being
Italy, with a share of 15.08 percent of the company's total exports,
Turkey, with a share of 13.11 percent, and
China, with a share of 11.66 percent of total exports.
Of the company's total steel product exports, 55.74 percent were hot rolled steel, 17.44 percent were plates, 4.99 percent were cold rolled steel, 20.31 percent were slabs, 1.43 percent were pig iron, and 0.09 percent were pipes.
Ilyich's 2009 export deliveries to
CIS countries amounted to 176,376 mt of steel products, of which 96,389 mt (54.6 percent) were shipped to
Russia, 31,423 mt (17.8 percent) to
Belarus, and 18,130 mt (10.1 percent) to Azerbaijan. Of the company's total exports to
CIS countries, 36,831 mt (20.9 percent) was hot rolled steel of more than 10 mm thickness, 58,761 mt (33.3 percent) was galvanized steel, and 32,719 mt (18.6 percent) was hot rolled steel of up to 10 mm thickness.
In 2009,
Ilyich's export deliveries to
CIS countries decreased by 43.5 percent compared to 2008. In particular, the shipments to
Russia went down by 48.6 percent, deliveries to
Belarus dropped by 51.9 percent, but supplies to Armenia increased by 94.5 percent, all compared to 2008.
