Turkish consumer confidence in May reaches highest level since March 2008

According to the monthly consumer tendency survey released by the Turkish Statistical Institute (TUIK), the consumer confidence index* in Turkey, which stood at 85.8 points in April this year, increased by 0.91 percent month on month in May, rising to 86.58 points. This was the highest level achieved since March 2008.

According to the indices based on individual questions asked of Turkish consumers concerning the consumer tendency, in May this year the index for the general current economic situation increased by 3.51 percent, while the index for the general economic situation in the next three months rose by 0.69 percent, both compared to April.
 
Meanwhile, in May, the index for the probability of buying durable goods in the next six months increased by 0.63 percent, the index for the probability of buying a car in the next six months decreased by 1.25 percent and the index for the probability of buying or building a home in the next 12 months improved by 0.12 percent.
 
* When the index is above 100 it indicates an optimistic outlook, when it is equal to 100 it indicates a neutral outlook, and below 100 it points to a pessimistic outlook.
