Turkey’s slab imports in Sept hit peak since June 2008

According to the customs statistics provided by the Turkish Statistical Institute (TUIK), in September this year Turkey's slab imports hit the highest level recorded since June 2008, amounting to 106,138 metric tons, rising significantly compared to the 60,500 mt recorded in the previous month. According to the TUIK data, no slab was imported into Turkey in September 2011.
 
Turkey's top slab source in September this year was the UK which supplied 46,500 mt of slab to Turkey, up 15.8 percent compared to the previous month.
 
In the first nine months of this year, Turkey imported 426,724 mt of slab, more than triple compared to the first nine months of the previous year. The import value of slab imported into Turkey in January-September was $241.5 million, almost triple compared to the same period last year.
 
In the period in question, Turkey's slab imports from the UK totaling 127,270 mt constituted 30 percent of the country's total slab imports. In the first three quarters of 2011, there were no slab imports from the UK to Turkey.
