In May this year, Turkey's steel scrap import volume increased by 4.84 percent month on month to 1.84 million metric tons, up 36.83 percent year on year, according to the data provided by the Turkish Statistical Institute (TUIK). The value of this import volume totaled $686.25 million, up 6.64 percent month on month and increasing by 30.64 percent year on year.

Meanwhile, in the first five months of this year Turkey's steel scrap import volume increased by 5.50 percent to 7.98 million mt, while the value of these imports totaled $3.03 billion, up 1.25 percent, both on year-on-year basis.

In the first five months, Turkey imported 1.59 million mt of steel scrap from the US, down 27 percent year on year, though the US remained first among Turkey's steel scrap import sources in the given period, ahead of the UK which imported 1.17 mt of steel scrap from Turkey, up 28.61 percent year on year. In May alone, Turkey's steel scrap imports from the US increased by 33.04 percent year on year to 283,125 mt.

On the other hand, according to the statistics released by the US International Trade Commission (US ITC), in the first five months Turkey's scrap imports from the US totaled 1.48 million mt, down 38.28 percent year on year. Thus, there seems to be a difference between the TUIK and the US ITC data. The report "US iron and steel scrap exports up 15.8% in May over April", written considering the US ITC data, is shown below:
