According to the report released by the Turkish Iron and Steel Producers' Association (TCUD), in the first five months of this year in
Turkey scrap consumption by electric arc furnaces, which produced 10 million mt of crude steel, totaled 11.4 million mt and
scrap usage by blast furnaces, which produced 4.07 million mt of crude steel, amounted to 488,000 mt, both on year-on-year basis. Accordingly, in the January-May period
Turkey's crude steel output decreased by 2.2 percent year on year to 14.07 million mt and
scrap usage totaled 11.89 million mt.
In the given period,
Turkey's
scrap imports increased by 5.5 percent to 7.98 million mt, while these imports were valued at $3.03 billion, up 1.2 percent, both on year-on-year basis.
In the first five months of the current year,
Turkey's
scrap imports from European countries increased by 11.8 percent year on year to 4.40 million mt, while
scrap imports from the US contracted by 27 percent to 1.59 million mt and imports from CIS countries surged by 85.5 percent to 1.44 million mt, both on year-on-year basis.
In line with the increase in
scrap imports, in the first five months this year
Turkey's domestic
scrap supply volume decreased by 12.8 percent year on year to 3.91 million mt.
