Turkey’s scrap imports up 11 percent in January-May

In May this year, Turkey's scrap import volume increased by 23.6 percent year on year to 2.1 million metric tons and was up 26 percent compared to the previous month, according to the data provided by the Turkish Statistical Institute (TUIK). The value of these imports totaled $590.4 million, up 51.9 percent year on year and up 30.5 percent compared to April.

In the first five months of the current year, Turkey's scrap import volume amounted to 8 million mt, rising by 11 percent, while the value of these imports increased by 65.3 percent to $2.18 billion, both year on year.

In the given period, Turkey imported 1,358,556 mt of scrap from the US, up 1.70 percent year on year, with the US ranking as Turkey's leading scrap import source, ahead of the UK which supplied 1,163,352 mt in the given period, up 23.98 percent year on year.
