According to data released Friday by the US Census Bureau, total October exports of $179.2 billion and imports of $22.6 billion resulted in a goods and services deficit of $43.5 billion, down 1.6 percent from $44.2 billion in September. September also represented the lowest monthly deficit level in 2011 so far.

On the other hand, exports declined 3 percent and imports rose 1.9 percent in October in Canada, according to a report Friday by Statistics Canada. Canada's trade balance fell from a surplus of $1 billion in September to an $885 million deficit in October. Imports reached a record high of $39.3 billion, as volumes increased 1.3 percent.
