Tata Steel breaks production record

India's largest private steel producer Tata Steel achieved a record in the production of hot metal, crude steel and saleable steel products in the second quarter of fiscal year 2005-2006. The company produced 1.32 million tons of hot metal, 1.23 million tons of crude steel, and 1.21 million tons of saleable steel products in the second quarter of 2005-2006 fiscal year. The figures indicate a rise of 17 percent, 15 percent, and 14 percent respectively, against the same period of previous year. The increase in the production is attributed to the completion of certain expansion projects. Sales in the second quarter increased to 1.18 million tons, up 14 percent against the corresponding period of 2004. Sales of branded products, Tata Shaktee (corrugated galvanized sheets) and Tata Steelium (cold rolled sheets) registered an increase of 16 percent, while Tata TISCON sales saw an increase of 15 percent against the second quarter of 2004. Moreover, the supply of cold rolled and galvanized steel products to the auto sector increased 10 percent and 221 percent, respectively as compared to the second quarter of previous year.
