After an eight-month lockout, United Steel Workers Local 8782 has resumed negotiations with US Steel Canada. According to the union's Web site, "bargaining committee members are currently engaged with the company and are optimistic in reaching an agreement."
Approximately 800 steelworkers were laid off from the idle Lake Erie Works plant in March 2009, and the remaining 200 workers were locked out in August. They have been picketing at the front gate ever since.
The Canadian government has filed a lawsuit against US Steel under the Investment Canada Act, accusing the company of breaking production and employment promises made when it acquired Stelco in 2007.
