Taiwan’s basic metal output down 7.4 percent in May

Taiwan's industrial production index in May this year fell by 0.1 percent as compared to May 2012 after falling by a revised 0.8 percent year on year in April, and was up 4.86 percent month on month, according to the country's Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA). However, the country's seasonally adjusted industrial production index in May rose one percent compared to April, and was down 0.85 percent compared to the same month of 2012.

In the first five months of the year, Taiwan's seasonally adjusted industrial production index increased 0.4 percent compared to the first five months of the previous year.

In May this year, industrial output in the country's basic metal manufacturing decreased by 7.4 percent and output of metal product manufacturing fell by 1.9 percent, both compared with May 2012. In addition, the two sectors saw an eight percent decrease and a 3.4 percent increase respectively on month-on-month basis. In the first five months of 2013, a 0.4 percent year-on-year increase was recorded in Taiwan's basic metal manufacturing output, while the fabricated metal production index rose 0.6 percent compared to January-May 2012.
 
Meanwhile, in May this year production in Taiwan's machinery and equipment industry fell by five percent, output in the automotive industry decreased by 6.6 percent, while production in the Taiwanese construction sector decreased by 1.7 percent, all compared to the same month of 2012.
