Summary of China’s steel imports & exports in October

In October, China's finished steel exports totaled 4.617 million mt, up 377,700 mt or 8.91 percent year on year, totaling a value of $5.804 billion, up $2.665 billion or 84.9 percent compared with the same month last year. In addition, finished steel exports for the January-October period reached 53.0749 million mt, down 686,500 mt or 1.28 percent, amounting to a total value of $55.571 billion, up $18.424 billion or 49.6 percent year on year.

Meanwhile, China's finished steel imports in October totaled 1.1443 million mt, down 65,700 mt or 5.43 percent year on year, totaling $2.024 billion in value, up $580 million or 40.2 percent compared with the same month last year. In addition, finished steel imports for the January-October period reached 13.4357 million mt, down 752,700 mt or 5.31 percent, amounting to $19.979 billion, up $2.884 billion or 16.87 percent year on year.

In October, the country's net exports of finished steel amounted to 3.4727 million mt, totaling a value of $3.78 billion. The average export price was $1,257/mt, up $516.62/mt or 69.78 percent year on year. The average import price was $1,768.38/mt, up $575.68/mt or 48.26 percent year on year. The export price was $511.38/mt or 40.68 percent lower than the import price.

In the January-October period, China's net finished steel exports reached 39.6392 million mt, amounting to a value of $35.592 billion.

The breakdown of China's steel imports and exports in October is as follows:

Rebar exports in October stood at 58,700 mt, down 224,000 mt or 79.25 percent year on year, totaling $53 million in value, down $96 million or 64.43 percent compared with the same month last year. The average export price was $899.4/mt. Total exports in the January-October period reached 1.0893 million mt, down 4.4292 million mt or 80.26 percent, amounting to $875 million, down $1.597 billion or 64.59 percent year on year.

Rebar imports in October stood at 1,600 mt, down 200 mt or 11.95 percent year on year, totaling $2 million in value, down $1 million or 51.45 percent compared with the same month last year. The average import price was $1,035/mt. Total January-October rebar imports reached 22,700 mt, down 20,400 mt or 47.36 percent, amounting to a total value of $14 million, down $9 million or 38.21 percent year on year.

China's wire rod exports in October totaled 296,700 mt, up 4,600 mt or 1.58 percent year on year, totaling $294 million in value, up $139 million or 89.36 percent compared with the same period last year. The average export price was $991.95/mt. Total exports in January-October reached 4.8139 million mt, down 703,500 mt or 12.75 percent, amounting to $4.192 billion in value, up $1.636 billion or 64.02 percent year on year.

Wire rod imports in October amounted to 47,700 mt, up 7,200 mt or 17.79 percent year on year, totaling a value of $69 million, up $26 million or 59.75 percent compared with the same period last year. The average import price was $1,439.18/mt. Total imports in January-October reached 451,200 mt, down 77,000 mt or 14.57 percent, amounting to $570 million, up $98 million or 20.77 percent year on year.

China's medium plate exports in October reached 628,700 mt, up 12,100 mt or 1.96 percent year on year, totaling $795 million in value, up $351 million or 79.26 percent compared with the same period last year. The average export price was $1,264.49/mt. Total January-October exports reached 7.1892 million mt, up 375,800 mt or 5.52 percent, amounting to a total value of $7.282 billion, up $2.828 billion or 63.48 percent year on year.

Medium plate imports in October stood at 110,100 mt, up 12,700 mt or 13.01 percent year on year, totaling $206 million, up $88 million or 73.85 percent compared with the same month last year. The average import price was $1,873.26/mt. Total January-October medium plate imports came to 1.0716 million mt, up 78,400 mt or 7.89 percent, amounting to $1.741 billion, up $429 million or 32.69 percent year on year.

China's HR coil export volume in October stood at 717,100 mt, down 69,500 mt or 8.83 percent year on year, totaling a value of $755 million, up $274 million or 57 percent compared with the same period last year. The average export price was $1,052.93/mt. Total January-October HR coil exports reached 9.8818 million mt, up 1.4771 million mt or 17.57 percent, amounting to $8.901 billion, up $3.711 billion or 71.51 percent year on year.

HR coil imports in October came to 139,900 mt, up 20,600 mt or 17.32 percent year on year, totaling a value of $172 million, up $74 million or 75.22 percent compared with the same period last year. The average HR coil import price was $1,227.56/mt. Total HR coil imports in the January-October period reached 1.5992 million mt, down 382,700 mt or 19.31 percent, amounting to $1.796 billion in value, down $430 million or 19.3 percent year on year.

China's CR coil export volume in October reached 326,300 mt, up 144,900 mt or 82.92 percent year on year, totaling $374 million, up $226 million or 153.71 percent compared with the same period last year. The average CR coil export price was $1,146.61/mt. Total January-October exports for this product reached 3.0349 million mt, up 1.1093 mt or 57.6 percent, amounting to $3.574 billion, up $1.109 billion or 45 percent year on year.

CR coil imports in October stood at 240,500 mt, down 90,300 mt or 27.31 percent year on year, totaling $305 million in value, up $20 million or 6.95 percent compared with the same period last year. The average import price was $1,268.33/mt. Total January-October CR coil imports reached 3.393 million mt, down 226,100 mt or 6.25 percent, amounting to a value of $3.491 billion, up $365 million or 11.67 percent year on year.
