Summary of China’s steel imports & exports in December 2008

In December, China's finished steel exports totaled 3.168 million mt, down 1.6157 million mt or 33.77 percent year on year, totaling a value of $3.93 billion, up $164 million or 4.36 percent compared with the same month last year. In addition, finished steel exports for the January-December period reached 59.1831 million mt, down 3.4632 million mt or 5.53 percent, amounting to a total value of $63.373 billion, up $19.24 billion or 43.6 percent year on year.

Meanwhile, China's finished steel imports in December totaled 927,900 mt, down 406,900 mt or 30.49 percent year on year, totaling $1.6 billion in value, down $130 million or 7.51 percent compared with the same month last year. In addition, finished steel imports for the January-December period reached 15.3871 million mt, down 1.4835 million mt or 8.79 percent, amounting to $23.342 billion, up $2.79 billion or 13.57 percent year on year.

In December, the country's net exports of finished steel amounted to 2.2401 million mt, totaling a value of $2.33 billion. The average export price was $1,240.44/mt, up $453.24/mt or 57.58 percent year on year. The average import price was $1,724.66/mt, up $428.46/mt or 33.06 percent year on year. The export price was $484.22/mt or 28.08 percent lower than the import price.

In the January-December period, China's net finished steel exports reached 43.796 million mt, amounting to a value of $40.031 billion.

The breakdown of China's steel imports and exports in December is as follows:

Rebar exports in December stood at 34,300 mt, down 174,900 mt or 83.59 percent year on year, totaling $25 million in value, down $91 million or 78.55 percent compared with the same month last year. The average export price was $723.49/mt. Total exports in the January-December period reached 1.1682 million mt, down 4.7357 million mt or 80.21 percent, amounting to $938 million, down $1.746 billion or 65.06 percent year on year.

Rebar imports in December stood at 1,200 mt, down 2,300 mt or 65.28 percent year on year, totaling $1 million in value, down $1 million or 44.81 percent compared with the same month last year. The average import price was $905/mt. Total January-December rebar imports reached 25,200 mt, down 24,600 mt or 49.38 percent, amounting to a total value of $16 million, down $10 million or 38.2 percent year on year.

China's wire rod exports in December totaled 132,900 mt, up 225,400 mt or 62.92 percent year on year, totaling $92 million in value, down $114 million or 55.48 percent compared with the same period last year. The average export price was $689.17/mt. Total exports in January-December reached 5.0558 million mt, down 1.1819 mt or 18.95 percent, amounting to $4.374 billion in value, up $1.414 billion or 47.78 percent year on year.

Wire rod imports in December amounted to 31,800 mt, down 10,500 mt or 24.86 percent year on year, totaling a value of $44 million, down $3 million or 6.6 percent compared with the same period last year. The average import price was $1,396.17/mt. Total imports in January-December reached 521,000 mt, down 93,500 mt or 15.21 percent, amounting to $671 million, up $98 million or 17.09 percent year on year.

China's medium plate exports in December reached 423,500 mt, down 279,600 mt or 39.77 percent year on year, totaling $528 million in value, up $14 million or 2.65 percent compared with the same period last year. The average export price was $1,246.19/mt. Total January-December exports reached 7.9509 million mt, down 270,200 mt or 3.29 percent, amounting to a total value of $8.233 billion, up $2.75 billion or 50.15 percent year on year.

Medium plate imports in December stood at 104,400 mt, down 22,200 mt or 17.52 percent year on year, totaling $180 million, up $15 million or 9.38 percent compared with the same month last year. The average import price was $1,727.19/mt. Total January-December medium plate imports came to 1.2717 million mt, up 62,600 mt or 5.18 percent, amounting to $2.088 billion, up $495 million or 31.04 percent year on year.

China's HR coil export volume in December stood at 339,800 mt, down 648,700 mt or 65.63 percent year on year, totaling a value of $306 million, down $342 million or 52.82 percent compared with the same period last year. The average export price was $900.09/mt. Total January-December HR coil exports reached 10.5486 million mt, up 496,500 mt or 4.94 percent, amounting to $9.549 billion, up $3.291 billion or 52.59 percent year on year.

HR coil imports in December came to 100,400 mt, down 47,000 mt or 31.87 percent year on year, totaling a value of $100 million, down $56 million or 35.91 percent compared with the same period last year. The average HR coil import price was $997.68/mt. Total HR coil imports in the January-December period reached 1.7929 million mt, down 476,300 mt or 20.99 percent, amounting to $2.011 billion in value, down $513 million or 20.32 percent year on year.

China's CR coil export volume in December reached 160,200 mt, down 72,700 mt or 31.21 percent year on year, totaling $147 million, down $82 million or 35.91 percent compared with the same period last year. The average CR coil export price was $918.29/mt. Total January-December exports for this product reached 3.345 million mt, up 1.0104 million mt or 43.28 percent, amounting to $3.879 billion, up $1 billion or 34.74 percent year on year.

CR coil imports in December stood at 198,800 mt, down 152,900 mt or 43.47 percent year on year, totaling $217 million in value, down $101 million or 31.69 percent compared with the same period last year. The average import price was $1,091.79/mt. Total January-December CR coil imports reached 3.7813 million mt, down 555,600 mt or 12.81 percent, amounting to a value of $3.929 billion, up $153 million or 4.05 percent year on year.
