Strong surge in Turkey’s steel imports from China in H1

According to the Turkish Iron and Steel Producers' Association (TCUD), in the January-June period this year Turkey's steel imports from China surged by 194.1 percent to 927,000 mt, while the value of these imports amounted to $927 million, up 59.4 percent, both compared to the same period of the previous year.
 
In the first half of this year, Turkey’s billet imports from China exceeded 110,000 mt. In the given period, Turkey’s flat steel imports increased by 343.8 percent to 526,000 mt, long steel imports rose by 141.4 percent to 107,000 mt and pipe imports moved up by 33.4 percent to 115,000 mt.
 
On the other hand, in June this year Turkey’s steel imports from China increased by 136.6 percent to 106,000 mt, while the value of these imports increased by 49.6 percent to $127 million, both year on year.
 
During June, Turkey did not purchase any slab or billet from China. In the given month, Turkey’s flat steel imports from China increased by 233.3 percent to 55,000 mt, long steel imports increased by 186.3 percent to 11,000 mt and pipe imports rose by 97.2 percent to 27,000 mt.
