Steel Dynamics records halved sales but minor loss in 2009

On February 3, Fort Wayne, Indiana, US-based steelmaker Steel Dynamics Inc issued its financial results for the fourth quarter of 2009 and the whole year, reporting that the company's performance was reasonably good in light of the extraordinary steel-market and economic conditions.

The net loss of the company was $8.2 million in 2009, compared with a net profit of $463.4 million in 2008. Net sales revenues in 2009 have seen a dramatic decrease of 51 percent, dropping from $8.1 billion in the previous year to $4 billion.

Steel shipments for the year 2009 were 4 million mt, 28 percent lower than the 5.6 million mt shipped in 2008.

In the fourth quarter of 2009, the company's net profit was $26.7 million, compared with a loss of $82.7 million in the same period of 2008. Net sales revenues in the fourth quarter of 2009 saw a three percent decrease, dropping from $1.21 billion in the fourth quarter of 2008 to $1.18 billion.

Steel shipments for the fourth quarter were 1.2 million mt, 24 percent higher than 942,440 mt shipped in the fourth quarter of 2008.
