In 2014, total steel consumption in Ukraine will amount to just 4 million mt compared to 7.1 million mt in 2013, according to the state-owned enterprise Ukrpromvneshekspertiza.

According to Vladimir Vlasyuk, CEO of Ukrpromvneshexpertiza, this slump in consumption was mostly due to declines in the steel consumption of the machinery manufacturing (down 20.9 percent year on year) and construction (down 18.6 percent year on year) sectors.

In 2015, steel consumption in Ukraine is expected to fall to 3.4 million mt. However, if some major infrastructural projects are carried out, the figure could be as high as 5.8 million mt. "Infrastructure needs a lot of steel, and it must be repaired. The steel consumption potential in Ukraine is very great," Mr. Vlasyuk commented.
