In August this year, motor vehicle production in Spain dropped to its lowest level recorded since August 1997, while almost the entire production was destined for the export markets for the first time in history, according to a statement released by the Spanish Automobile and Truck Manufacturers' Association (Anfac).
In August, total motor vehicle production in Spain decreased by 41 percent to 49,351 units, including 40,600 passenger cars - down 40.6 percent, both compared to August 2009. In the commercial vehicle segment, a sharp year-on-year decrease of 48 percent was recorded in August.
Meanwhile, in the first eight months of this year, Spain's total motor vehicle output amounted to 1,586,580 units, rising by 20.1 percent year on year. In the January-August period, the passenger car segment recorded a growth of 16.7 percent and totaled 1,288,352 passenger cars built, while commercial vehicle production rose 34.2 percent to 275,688 units.
In August, 98.4 percent of total production was exported, while motor vehicle exports in the first eight months of this year grew by 15.5 percent year on year to 1,349,171 units. The percentage of the total export of vehicles produced in Spain in the January-August period stood at 85 percent.
