Spanish industrial output index down 10.4 percent in March

In the month of March of the current year, Spain's industrial production index decreased by 10.4 percent year on year, while the seasonally adjusted index declined by 7.5 percent month on month. According to the figures provided by Spain's National Statistics Institute (INE), in February this year respective declines of 3.2 percent and 5.3 percent were witnessed.

In March this year, Spanish production decreased particularly in the manufacture of metal elements for construction, down 39.5 percent, in manufacture of motor vehicles, down 17.9 percent, and in manufacture of basic products of iron, steel and ferroalloys, down 22.9 percent, all year on year.

In the January-March period of the current year, the Spanish industrial production index declined by 5.6 percent compared to the same period of 2011. In particular, durable consumer goods declined by 10.8 percent, non-durable consumer goods decreased by 2.6 percent, instrumental goods fell by 10 percent and intermediate goods by 7.6 percent. The energy production index recorded the only positive year-on-year change in the given quarter, up 0.3 percent year on year.
