Germany-based plantmaker SMS Group has announced that it will modernize the continuous slab caster No. 6 and the heavy plate mill of Russian steel producer Magnitogorsk Iron and Steel Works (MMK). The project, including all modification and installation work and the commissioning, is scheduled to be completed by the end of the current year.

According to SMS, the caster, which currently produces slabs with thicknesses of 190 mm, 250 mm and 300 mm, will in future be able to also produce slabs with thickness of 350 mm. The maximum cast width will remain unchanged at 2,700 mm. The future higher weight per meter of the slabs will optimize the allotment of the plates to be produced from the slabs. As a result, the yield will increase markedly.
