Germany-based plantmaker SMS Siemag has put an electric steelmaking plant and a continuous slab caster into operation for one of the largest manufacturers of cold rolled products in the North African region, namely, Morocco-based Maghreb Steel.

According to SMS Siemag's statement, the continuous caster produces slabs in widths from 900 mm to 2,150 mm and with a thickness of 200 mm. The slabs casted in the new caster can be processed into steel strip at the Steckel rolling mill operating since 2010, or into plates at the heavy plate mill launched in October 2011.

SMS Siemag has also supplied a 120 ton electric arc furnace and a 120 ton ladle furnace. The new facilities with an annual production of 1 million mt of steel will supply the Steckel rolling mill and the heavy plate mill with feedstock.
