German plantmaker SMS Demag has announced that it has received an order for the supply of a heavy-plate mill from Russian steelmaker Vyksa Steel, a subsidiary of the OMK Group, Russia's largest manufacturer of longitudinal submerged arc welded (LSAW) pipes.

In a statement on the issue, SMS Demag said that the new mill will enable Vyksa Steel to produce plates up to strength class X 120, which will be extremely important for energy supply in the future, and to manufacture heavy plates for the mechanical engineering, shipbuilding and construction industries.

The annual output capacity of the single-stand rolling mill is 1.2 million mt of finished plates in widths between 900-4,800 mm and thicknesses from 7-150 mm, whereas the maximum plate weight is 40 mt.

The new mill is to be commissioned in mid-2010.
