Germany-based steelmaker Salzgitter Flachstahl GmbH has placed an order with German plantmaker SMS Demag for the revamping of its hot strip mill.

The order comprises extensive revamping work on the roughing and finishing trains, the installation of new gears, the supply of a new coiler and of a coil conveyor system, as well as the automation of the new mechanical equipment and of the complete coiler system.

In a statement on the issue, SMS Demag said that the modernization work at the mill is of great importance for Salzgitter since it will enable the company to increase its annual production capacity to 4.5 million mt and to enlarge its maximum finished strip width to 2,000 mm.

This revamping project will be commenced by Salzgitter in the spring of 2009 and completed by the end of 2010.
