Austria-based giant engineering and plantmaking company, Siemens VAI Mining and Metals Technologies, has announced the receipt of an order from Russian steelmaker Severstal for the installation of an integrated Manufacturing Execution System (MES) at its Cherepovets plant.

The new Siemens' MES will allow Severstal to have its own platform for plant-wide production planning and monitoring, which not only ensures a high level of product quality, but also optimizes operating costs and stock levels.

The system provides plant operators with an overview of material flows and production processes at all times. With the help of key performance indicators (KPIs), processes can be evaluated and the entire value chain in the plant can be improved.

Within the scope of the deal, worth more than €10 million, Siemens will be responsible for designing, implementing and commissioning the complete MES as well as for training users and optimizing the installations during ongoing operation.

Implementation of the MES solution is scheduled for completion in summer 2011.
