The provincial government of the eastern Chinese province of Shandong has announced that it will concentrate its efforts on the establishment of a steel industry base in the coastal city of Rizhao in the coming five years, while no inland steel projects are to be approved during the same period.

The Shandong provincial government stated that efforts would be made to accelerate the construction of a large-scale steel industry base in Rizhao, with the focus in steel industry development being transferred from inland to coastal areas.

The designed capacity of the steel industry base at Rizhao will be 20 million mt, including a total of 15 million mt of newly-built capacity. The new projects will be constructed in two phases; the first phase will involve the construction of 10 million mt of newly-added capacity, with an additional five million mt being added in the second phase. Rizhao Steel Co., Ltd.'s current capacity of five million mt will be maintained and integrated into the new steel base.

High-tech and high value-added products such as hot rolled sheet, wide and heavy plate, and seamless tubes are the main products to be manufactured at the steel industry base in Rizhao.
