Jiangsu Shagang Group (Shagang) has commenced construction work on its expansion project to increase the production capacity of heavy plates of up to five meters in width. The whole expansion project for the designed capacity of four million metric tons is expected to take twenty-four months, with production expected to begin in 2009.
Within the scope of the project, a further optimization will be made to product varieties in order to focus production mainly on high-tech and high value-added steel plates used for ships and line pipes, of 3,500-4,800 mm in width and 5-50 mm in thickness.
Jiangsu Shagang Group is located in ZhangJiagang City of China, an economic development zone by the Yangtze River. The company employs over 9,700 personnel, with facilities covering an area of 10 square kilometers. Current annual production capacity is 10 million metric tons of iron, 15 million metric tons of steel, 15 million metric tons of rolled products, 1.2 million metric tons of stainless steel strip and 150,000 metric tons of galvanized steel sheet.
