According to the South East Asia Iron and Steel Institute (SEAISI), the huge surge in exports of low-priced steel products from China has become a big problem for steel players in the world. This has led to many countries, including the ASEAN region, imposing trade measures against China's steel exports. Despite these measures, China's steel exports to the ASEAN region have continued to increase, especially exports of alloyed steel.

The SEASI warned that exports of steel structures from China, though smaller in volume compared to steel, should not be overlooked as the volume has been increasing rapidly over the years. According to data from Chinese customs, China's total exports of steel structures jumped from 603,000 mt in 2000 to 6.5 million mt in 2014. Chinese steel structure exports to ASEAN countries increased even more significantly, from 50,700 mt in 2000 to 1.1 million mt in 2014.
