Scrap import booming in Erlianhaote

Based on statistics data from the city of Erlianhaote in northern China, the land port of Erlianhaote imported 20.720 tons of scrap in the first six months of the year, up 264.3 percent year on year. The major reasons for surging scrap import in the city are: 1) The high price of iron ore led steelmakers to prefer scrap as their raw material. Furthermore, the imported scrap usually enjoys simple processing procedures and low processing cost. 2) Due to scrap coming in various sizes, transportation by railway may damage the wagons. The railway ministry has taken steps to curb scrap import, while expressways are comparatively more lenient toward scrap import. Erlianhaote is a highway port. 3) Since Manzhouli port has restrained scrap import, many enterprises prefer Erlianhaote.
