Indian state-owned steel producer Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) is likely to collaborate in a joint venture with Indian government owned and operated Indian Railway (IR) for a railway coach manufacturing unit in the southern state of Kerala, an official at India’s railways ministry said on Friday, December 4.
The ministry official said that IR has agreed in principle to team up with public sector company SAIL and details like investments and capacity will be finalized after the formation of the joint venture company.
This will be SAIL’s second foray into railway equipment manufacturing. It is also implementing a stainless steel freight wagon manufacturing facility in West Bengal state in a 50:50 joint venture with Rail India Technical and Economic Services (RITES), the consultancy and infrastructure wing of IR.
