SAIL maintains finished steel output in Q1

The integrated steel plants of Indian steel producer Steel Authority of India (SAIL) produced 1.95 million tons of finished steel in the quarter ending 30 June 2004. In fact, despite a coal shortage finished steel production increased by 87% in Q1 of the current fiscal year in comparison to 76% in Q1 of last year. According to a press statement released by SAIL, the intergrated plants were able to compensate for the shortage in coal supplies by quickly transferring to alternative fuels such as coal tar, coal dust, petroleum tar, and the use of sponge iron.
