S. Korea ranks first in per capita steel consumption
South Korea's per capita steel consumption was the highest in the world in 2005 due to the country's strong shipbuilding, electronics and car industries. South Korea Iron & Steel Association (KISA) based on data compiled from the International Iron and Steel Institute (IISI) said that the per capita steel consumption in South Korea was 969 kg in 2005, ahead of Taiwan with 944 kg and Japan with 613 kg. KISA expects South Korea's per capita steel consumption to amount 1,010 kg this year, surpassing the estimate for rival Taiwan's 955 kg.
